UMGC Gives First-Year Students Tools to Succeed

A student鈥檚 first year of college can be challenging, whether they are entering right out of high school or are a working adult or military servicemember returning to school after a hiatus. Attending a school that prioritizes providing support for first-year students can be critical in ensuring students鈥 success.

抖阴视频 (UMGC) offers several programs, services, and resources that are tailored to help first-year students thrive and achieve their educational and professional goals.

Success Network Partners offer first-year students a lay of the land

First-year students don鈥檛 start their college journey alone at UMGC. Each is paired with a Success Network Partner: an academic success coach, an advisor, a program coordinator, or a Military Education Coordinator (MEC). These roles all serve as a student鈥檚 primary point of contact, but can vary in terms of communication methods (in-person, phone, email or Zoom) and engagement frequency. Success Network Partners get to know the students they鈥檙e working with and address their concerns.

鈥淪uccess coaches [and other Success Network Partners] are committed to partnering with students as they navigate their UMGC journey through thought-provoking and supportive conversations, empowering students to make informed degree planning decisions, connecting them with the right resources at the right time, and celebrating the student鈥檚 successful milestones and educational goals,鈥 says Aspen McPartland, Director of Student Success in the Office of Student Affairs.

The Success Network Partner and student relationship extends through the student鈥檚 entire time at the university. Success Network Partners have check-ins each month to help students build confidence and establish a strong relationship. Coaches also reach out to encourage students to register for recommended classes within their first term.

鈥淪peaking with (my success coach) on our first call was a great experience,鈥 says UMGC student and cybersecurity technology major Asad M. 鈥淪he was incredibly helpful, offering clear guidance and support right from the start. Her insights made me feel more confident and prepared, and I appreciate her dedication to helping me succeed.鈥

First-year students who are working with a Success Network Partner, but could use additional support may be referred to a First-Term Coach who can provide them with one-on-one academic counseling to help them overcome their initial struggles. The First-Term Coach will then work with the student鈥檚 assigned Success Network Partner to assist learners as they navigate their initial year at UMGC.

鈥淚n partnership with the assigned success coach, these First Term Coaches keep students on track by leveraging relationships and creating innovative data-based solutions to meet students where they are,鈥 McPartland says.

鈥(My coach) helped me get back on track and helped me find balance between work, school and my personal life since this is my first time in school in a long time,鈥 says UMGC student and BS in Health Services Management major Tyra J. 鈥淪he was amazing and always supportive throughout my first semester.鈥

First-year students also have access to courses such as PACE 100: Professional and Career Exploration for Transfer Students and PACE 111: Program and Career Exploration. These courses are designed to help learners connect their career goals with their education. They cover professional and academic success skills, show students how to build a professional success network, and introduce students to UMGC鈥檚 library, tutoring services, and career services.

New UMGC students are also invited to take part in live events such as classroom walkthroughs and virtual orientations. The UMGC JumpStart program offers webinars throughout the semester that introduce students to the school鈥檚 services. JumpStart also introduces students to online learning with a classroom walkthrough.

is also available to help first-year students navigate and find , which is another essential skill for coursework and research. The service also offers various and events for students and features a 24/7 live chat.

鈥淭hese services collectively empower first-year students to build strong study habits and confidently engage with their academic responsibilities,鈥 UMGC Peer Leader Tamila U. says.

The serves as an online hub where students can meet peers, share experiences and find relevant resources.

This inclusive space is designed for students to connect and find wellness resources and study tips. It鈥檚 also a place to build a network of peers and mentors. The UMGC Student Community is expanding to include course-specific communities, so learners can dive deeper into their first-year classes and connect with others right where they are learning.

鈥淭ogether, these spaces help ensure every student has the resources and connections they need throughout their UMGC journey,鈥 Adam Oldach, Senior Experience Designer, Digital Student Experience says.

Support services available for all UMGC students

College can also feel overwhelming at times once classes get going, especially when a student needs additional help with their work 鈥 no matter how many years they鈥檙e into their academic journey.

In these instances, UMGC offers programs to help keep students on track. These include one-on-one and group tutoring services in different subjects. Meanwhile, the Effective Writing Center (EWC) helps students improve their writing with detailed feedback from experienced writing advisors. The EWC can be an invaluable resource because a solid writing foundation will serve students well for their courses during their time at UMGC 鈥 and their career.

These resources can help students with their academic performance, but it can be difficult to keep up with classes and achieve good grades if a student is facing mental health challenges. When that happens, UMGC students can access the Togetherall platform, which provides anonymous, no-cost, 24/7 online peer-to-peer mental health and wellness support. Togetherall allows students to share their feelings and connect with peers who understand what they鈥檙e going through. Trained and licensed clinicians monitor the platform and are available to step in if a student is going through a more severe mental health crisis.

Students who have disabilities should make sure they contact UMGC鈥檚 Accessibility Services team for any accommodations they may need.

Keys to Success for First-Year Students

While UMGC offers programs and services to help students succeed in their first year, students can also be proactive to increase their odds of success. Mapping out goals and talking to family members and employers about the support they鈥檒l need is a great start.

鈥淎 majority of first year students work or serve in the military, have full-time jobs and family commitments 鈥 all of this takes time,鈥 Nancy Trojanowski Department Chair, First-Year Experience says. 鈥淓nlist (family members and employers) to become part of your success team. Find out what they need from you, too, and strike a balance. Apply the time management techniques you learn in PACE. Find other students in your same program or situation and support each other鈥檚 success.鈥

Using the provided tools such as course planners, course announcements, syllabi, assignment feedback, and school emails will significantly aid students in their first-year journey.

聽鈥淵our professors communicate via these tools and reviewing them will help you learn more and perform better,鈥 Trojanowski says.

Also, the sooner students get engaged with the UMGC Student Community and their coursework, the sooner they can build the connections and support system you need to thrive at UMGC.

鈥淕etting involved from the start will help you build connections, find support, and make the most of your time at UMGC,鈥 Oldach says. 鈥淎s our community offerings continue to grow, keep an eye out for new opportunities to connect with peers, join events, and access valuable resources. Staying active in these spaces can make your academic journey richer and more rewarding.鈥

Finally, students are encouraged to remain open to new experiences and embrace available resources such as UMGC online discussion boards, study groups, and peer mentoring. Doing so will make it easier to build a community as well as enhance their success and UMGC experience.

鈥淩emember that there鈥檚 a strong support network here to help you, so don鈥檛 hesitate to reach out when you need guidance,鈥 Tamila U. says. 鈥淏e patient with yourself. College is a journey, and UMGC offers so many resources to help you every step of the way.鈥
