A new exhibition atƵ | UMGC (UMGC) offers a peek at Andy Warhol’s view of the world using 140 Polaroid photographs by the pop art icon.

Social Angles and Interactions: The Photography of Andy Warhol, William J. Anderson, and A. Aubrey Bodine, provides viewers a glimpse into the social life of the famed artist. The exhibition, which opens April 23, is anchored by nearly 12 dozen photographs the Warhol Foundation gave UMGC as a gift in 2010.

“What’s exciting about this show is sharing our Andy Warhol collection with the public,” said Eric Key, director of UMGC’s Arts Program. “This collection of Polaroids provides insight into his creative mind and the world around him, and the other artists did the same thing, capturing the social environment in which they lived.”

The show also features the images of William J. Anderson, who documented the social inequalities of poverty-stricken rural communities in the South, and the photography of A. Aubrey Bodine, who captured Baltimore and Maryland’s landscapes and traditions. All photos on exhibit are part of the UMGC permanent collection.

“It is a special honor to introduce and host the exhibition, Social Angels and Interactions: Photography of Andy Warhol, William Anderson, and A. Aubrey Bodine,” said UMGC President Gregory W. Fowler, PhD. “These works by Warhol, Anderson, and Bodine serve to expand our experience of the world, its similarities and differences, its beauty and pain.”

UMGC has cultivated and grown its permanent art collections since 1978. The Maryland Artist Collection is one of the largest compilations of work by Maryland artists. The International Collection includes works by some of the nation's leading art figures, while The Asian Collection comprises centuries of Asian art, including Chinese ceramics and traditional scrolls that date as far back at the Tang Dynasty, as well as contemporary Japanese prints.

The opening reception for Social Angles and Interactions: The Photography of Andy Warhol, William J. Anderson, and A. Aubrey Bodine is Sunday, May 7, 2023, from 3–5 p.m. at the UMGC Arts Program Gallery, Lower Level, College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. The show runs until July 30.
