Learn about the types of courses that your financial aid at UMGC will not cover.

Federal Title IV aid and state financial aid regulations mandate that federal and state aid can only be used for courses that are required for your degree or certificate program. If you enroll in any courses that do not count toward your degree or certificate, those courses cannot be included when calculating your enrollment status (e.g., full-time, half-time, etc.) for the purpose of determining financial aid eligibility.

Financial Aid Impact

If you are using financial aid to pay for your educational expenses, course applicability could impact your aid eligibility and/or disbursement.

Example Scenario:

You are an undergraduate student enrolled in 12 credits for the semester, 6 of which are not applicable to your degree. How does this impact your financial aid eligibility?

Answer:

Your Federal aid would be adjusted based on your enrollment status being only half-time (since only the 6 program-applicable credits can be counted). You may lose eligibility for scholarships and grants that require enrollment in 12 program-applicable credits.

Review UMGC’s disbursement page to learn more about how your enrollment level impacts disbursement.

What Can You Do to Prevent This?

There are several ways to ensure that your course enrollment is applicable to your degree or certificate program. To stay on track and complete your program, you should always

  • Review the Academic Catalog and your Academic Advisement Report for required courses
  • Modify your courses to align with your current program of study though the MyUMGC student portal
  • Contact your success coach for help in choosing program-applicable courses
